I have taken the advice of several people and downloaded Avast Free Edition. I was just wondering how to use it? I have read what VRDB is and does anyone suggest having it on all the time or just when the computer is idle/screensaver? Thanks..

You can manage with the Virus Recovery Database, but it is recommended as Avast! will manage to recover anything that it deleted by mistake. It's always good to have it when the computer's idle, because it will slow down your computer if it's active all the time.

Set it and forget it.
Depending on your proccessor, amount of memory, and how many other background tasks you have running would impact my decision if I notice a performance drop.
