Problems with Norton Security Center/ AT&T Yahoo!?

Yesterday, I opened my AT%26T Yahoo! (I'll abbreviate to ATTY from now on) browser, and I was prompted to download new software from ATTY. The download totally revamped their online protection. It used to be ATTY antivirus and ATTY antispyware, but now it's all Norton.

The thing is, it's making me browser slow and my games lag. The ATTY one was much better. Should I just delete them and download free antivirus?

The "update" completely screwed me up and I contacted ATTY. (There isn't even any protection software at all available today--they disabled Norton downloads.)

ATT told me to go to Windows onecare and sign up for the free 90 day trial while ATT works out the problems.

EDIT with an update - I uninstalled the entire ATT/Yahoo protection suite, although it left some CA bits behind. Then I went to Live One and signed up for the free trial. After the installation, I am good to go, with no lingering Norton/CA problems.

spent 3 days with every tech level, 18 hours starting on the 15th. everything from not enough physical memory to reprogramming router. new software eats up physical memory. probably why computer runs slow (not just dsl). also problems updating virus definitions.

When I tried to update my Windows, I receive error message 80004002. Any idea?

My windows update used to be automatic. When my Norton antivirus told me that my subscription had already expired, I uninstall it and downloaded free antivirus. However my OS encountered problem during a cold booting and it have to recover from it. I noticed that my windows slowed down and a message told me that several firewall are active. I uninstalled the free antivirus and choose Restore. Since then, I'm always notified of outdated windows defender definations. open up the avg control center, select the update manager, click properties, then un check "do not ask for source" run the updater, and choose from file, navigate to your file and boom
personally don't worry about it till you get ur Internet back.
you could try to hardwire it to an internet capable computer (or the one that has avg on it) and try to transfer it to the computer without internet.

I bought a computer that came with a 60 day trail of Norton Antivirus 2006 (NAV6) well, it expired. Now I went out and bought Norton Antivirus 2007 (NAV7) and tried installing it. New virus? won&#039;t let me load antivirus software. HELP!!?

I just got my friend onto the internet but she appears to have a virus on her computer (it may be something else but if it is a virus it's a good one!) I decided that I'd better get her some virus protection, searched AVG and Internet Explorer closed, searched antivirus software and it closed again, tried searching virus, anti* etc. but eveytime it closed, finally managed to get on the site by searching AGV download but guess what???

Sooo, I went on to my computer and downloaded the file to load AVG on to her computer, transferred it with a chip reader and tried to open the file, absolutely nothing happens whichever way I try (run, open from explorer, add/remove programs)

What I really need to know, is it a virus? if so how do I get rid of it, I have only tried loading AVG so maybe it is specific to that program are there any other good free antivirus software (or even a trial version but one that removes viruss and doesn't just search for them)

Any help would be appreciated.

Just over the past few days my pc is running very very slow, it takes about 15 seconds to open or view something whereas before it was instant. Have you tried running defragmenter on your hard drive? It is under programs, accessories, system tools. It will move all components of an application, document, etc. to a single spot on your hard drive so that access is faster.
The only safe reg/file cleaner is Ccleaner although it will not speed up your computer defragging will ,Jkdefrag free and better than windows defrag will help keep your computer running faster.

Personally, I use AVG, IF I am using a Windows system. Of all the ones I have used, it takes up the least amount of resources. Now if you have a super-fast system, any of the others will do well for you, depending on what you use your computer for. I solved the entire problem of virii and spyware and I don't use Windows anymore. I have since moved on to Linux (Ubuntu, SuSE, Debian, Gentoo, etc..)

Now the purpose of a firewall is to keep unwanted (and potentially harmful) internet traffic from accessing your computer. I use a firewall suite called IPCop and I have it installed on an old PC I do not use anymore. Its entire purpose is to filter out my broadband connection and olny allow what I want through. If you want to run a firewall on your computer just keep in mind that nothing you run as software along with Windows will be 100% secure. There will always be a security hole somewhere. I just prevent people from getting to my system entirely by using another.

Try checking the Firefox forums. Also, make sure you have the latest version. I've been running Firefox on Vista for several weeks and haven't had any problems.
Currently Vista doesn't have Firefox on it's list of supported applications. Wait till they either release a hotfix for the app or Firefox devs figure out what is the conflict with Vista and put out an update.
This is why I didn't start running XP until 2003. I'm not going to pay good money to be a beta tester... I think it's better to wait and let the bugs get worked out.

If you have two scans going on - both antivirus and antispyware - yes stop them now and only do one at a time. AVG antivirus is medium-lite on the system when scanning, allowing you to work in the background during a scan easily. I bought the premium version this past year (diehard Norton antivirus user).

Your security scanners like antivirus and antispyware need their resources to do their job. What will bog things down a little is if you have good programs that are able to do "intensive scans" which means they are also scanning all zip files and compressed and hidden files. This you can choose to do once a week or at least twice a month - a full intensive scan. Viruses as opposed to spyware are going to be the ones that will infect compressed files. However, if it is a really severe spyware and coupled with a trojan or other - it too will be snooping into compressed files and attemtping to send that back to the cybercriminal on the other end.

Try downloading and running using Safe Mode with Networking. It often prevents malware from protecting itself.

Also, turn off System Restore to evict any copies of bad stuff that might be lurking there.

To get into Safe Mode with Networking:

1.Log out and reboot your machine.

2.When the machine starts the reboot sequence, press the F8 key repeatedly.

3.Select Safe Mode With Networking from the resulting menu.

4.The machine will continue booting, but the Windows desktop will look different. You won't be able to see the Internet, for instance.

5.When you're finished, log out and reboot back into normal mode.

In the future, you may want to get a different anti-virus. I've had Norton before and it gave me too many problems in the past. It also had a few conflicts with other (safe) programs - especially games. Two anti-virus programs I can recommend are Avast! and AVG.

Second, you pronably do have a nasty spyware infection. Get a good piece of antispyware software and see what you can get removed. Download ad-aware or spy-bot search and destroy to remove the pesky spyware, then find a good program that PREVENTS spyware. Spybot and Ad-Aware don't prevent, they just remove. I would reccomend Webroot Spysweeper, it is great software for prevention and removal both.

i have tried uninstalling many unused programs through CCleaner, which kind of helped increase its speed. i also installed McAfee antivirus, but for some reason, the on-access scan never finishes scanning my computer entirely; it always freezes at a file called Symaddlin.dll (or something similar?). i think the real problem is at startup; it's REALLY slow. it also doesn't start it in safe mode; instead, a flurry of commands (in MSDOS format) bombards my screen. i have a sony vaio with windows XP media center 2005. i'm trying to find a way to clean my computer without installing any more programs; i mean, some of them really help, but i just don't want anything more to attach itself to the laptop's harddrive/memory. i also don't really want to completely reboot the system/erase everything and start over, it's kinda a hassle, but it's my last resort. please help, i'm not much of a computer person D: and i really need to get my computer working ASAP, i have physics and calculus HW due LOL

It sounds bad to me. This is the reason I don't use laptops. I keep my OS (operating system) on one drive and my files on another. That way if I run into a problem I just wipe the drive with the OS and all is well with the world again.

u can use comodo firewall pro.
Windows firewall is enough to protect you, if u want another firewall, u have to disable windows firewall first otherwise they will be conflicting each other and you will face another problem.

You can search the whole web for a free software (like zonal alarm) but then if you are working on a office network then you have to configure your firewall to access on the office network, if your pc is used at home and not connected to any network u dont require any configuration.

For antiviruses (Mcafee or norton or other), if they are not having inbuilt firewall, they will not be interfering with any other seperate firewall programs. But if they do have (like their internet security versions) they will be interfering anywith any other seperate firewall programs. In that case you dont even need other seperate firewall programs.

I do computer work for a local volunteer fire station. So far I've been able to piece together several workstations (10) and a server with file shares, database for their stats, printer.. etc

The problem is, most of these workstations are aged, as they've been donated, and I've gotten lucky enough to get them running, well enough for a work computer anyways.

I was hoping to find a free centrally managed antivirus solution, so the server could download the updates however often, and the workstations would get it from the server. I'm hoping it'll use less resources than each one having to go out on the internet every time, checking on their own, and then downloading the updates all the way back down.

Low cost might be ok too, but this is a small place, with very limited funds... it took me 3 months of talking to get a backup solution for thier run database... and that was %26lt; $100...

Spyware Terminator is an antispyware, but you can embed the ClamAV antivirus into it to get effective virus protection. So I was using Firefox and trying to translate a Japanese website and I wanted something better than Google Language Tools. So I clicked one result and 3 Popups and a dialog box asking me to download some free antivirus software appeared (I'm 99% Sure it's a WinFixer Clone), but I forgot about one thing, and clicked the X command in the dialog box. Suddenly a webpage opened. I didn't know what to do so I forced quit on my computer (I held down the OFF button). Now I know the whole bit on the WinFixer Trojan. I don't think anything downloaded yet because I didn't see the Firefox Downloads window. But now, I want to know, is it safe to turn my computer back on? I forced quit as soon as the webpage opened, but I'm not quite sure if it downloaded. This all happened last week. Can someone please help me?

It has happened to me several times that I went to fix a friends computer and McAfee (which they had installed and paid for) didn't manage to get rid of the virus/trojan that had infected the pc. The next thing I usually try is downloading AVG, and believe it or not, 80% of the time it manages to get rid of it.

For firewall, well it depends. Zonealarm for example (one of the most well-known free firewalls) is well known for eating up system resources, and especially for slowing down the system startup.. But it is quite a good firewall.

Comodo personal is also very good (and free).

Personally, I just use the built in windows firewall. Many wannabe geeks tell me I'm an idiot for doing that, but they don't realise I have many other layers of security set up on my pc so that I don't have a huge need for outbound protection. (If you're confused by this: the main gripe many people have with the windows firewall is that it only monitors incoming traffic, not outbound. So if you have a piece of malware on your pc, it can connect to the internet..) My philosophy is to keep my pc clean in the first place and it has served me well over the last three years..

Our class is installing antivirus for Linux, Fedora Core 3 on 2 clients and a server. I can download and install Avast-Home Edition (Free), but when I try to run it, the only way it will work is by scanning ONLY the home directory, standard scan. If I try to scan the entire system and/or do a thorough scan, the system freezes. It will lock up the entire computer and not recognize the keyboard or mouse so the only way to shutdown is to hold the power button. Every time I reboot, Avast makes me re-insert the registration key before allowing me access to the scanner. I have already uninstalled all previous versions/downloads of antivirus as well. Please help!

Krypt is correct as you have 2 options and both will require that you have the root password for the machine. You probably do as you would have needed it to install Avast in the first place.

1. Login as root and run avast

2. Login as a normal user -%26gt; open up a terminal -%26gt; type "su -" and enter the root password. run avast from the terminal.

Note that Krypt asked to run "su" as oppose to "su -" in step 2.

"su -" will give you root's environment (path) and "su" will not.

AVG is as good as you can get for antivirus protection.

If you have Windows XP, you have a build-in firewall that's as good as one you can buy, but if you don't have XP, then ZoneAlarm is a good one to get. You do need a firewall along with the antivirus. But that's not all you need. As good as it is, AVG won't protect your computer against spyware, trojans, adware, etc. For that, you need the combination of SpyBot Search %26 Destroy and Ad-Aware, both free from download.com.

But remember this: these things are only as good as you make them. they must be updated regularly and used regularly. Do a virus scan as soon as you install AVG.

Immunize the computer in SpyBot as soon as you get it installed, then run a full bot check. Remove everything it finds using Fix Selected Problems.

Run a full system scan in Ad-Aware, and remove everything it finds. Don't quarantine it, remove it.

Thereafter, AVG will update itself, but you have to update SpyBot and Ad-Aware weekly to keep them current. Then use them regularly to keep your computer free of junk and running smoothly.
