Another thing that can infulance speed is the state of your telephone line some people have more better lines so can get higher speeds like 16MB or 8MB and those that can't may get 2MB or 1MB. Also check the ISP is not sending more data down your line than it can support a friend of mine had a 1MB line and the ISP sends 2MB down the internet connection was lower than Dial up. Changing between Firewire and USB will not change a thing Firewire runs at 350MB and USB 400MB you cannot get that bandwidth anywear. Firewire 2 is faster than USB its at 800MB/

AVG from Grisoft is a really good AntiVirus package. I've been using them for 4 or 5 years. You should be able to install it before you remove Norton.
avg is good, avg pro is better, but if nortons works, dont fix it.

You could try going to www.moneysaving expert.com. They have a section on the best free downloads. They probably also have a forum/discussion board with people talking about their experiences of using them. While you are there you can check out loads of other ways to save yourself some moey.

Pccilen,F-Secure...these shoftware performance is great but you have to pay.yo can check trial versions.
If you want a good free anti-virus, then I reccomend Avast Home Edition, which is free as long as you register with them (a simple process).

Avast is easy to use, has a simple interface, a good virus database updater, and constantly scans your computer with it's resident shield, providing protection even for software such as Windows Live Messenger, AIM and Limewire.

Also, if your planning to get an anti-virus, i suggest you might want to get a good firewall too. Well.....i could really need some advice. At the moment i have got free off the internet, AVG antivirus, spy doctor and zone alarm. I have also purchased a registry mechanic.

My computer is getting slower and more annoying, can anyone suggest some really really good free programs i can download that'll perform miracles on my computer. I am looking for reliable programmes that will speed up my computer and clean it up a bit.

I remembered that because I have Comcast internet, I can get McAfee AntiVirus for free, so I downloaded it. Yet, I cannot fully download it (I don't get the virus scan out of all things!) because I still have an old version of Norton AntiVirus on my computer. The Auto-Protect won't enable no matter how many times I try so I'm ready to get rid of it. The problem is, I need the original CD to get it off my computer. I don't have it! I really need to rid my computer of viruses, FAST! Is there any way I can do this without the CD? Please help!

Also, if I can do that, I want to download McAfee again to run the scan but I'm afraid my system might be reinfected by System Restore. Active Virus Shield (AVS) was a version of Kaspersky Antivirus provided free by AOL (US). It was excellent but has been discontinued http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivir... . You needed to provide an email in order to be sent an authorisation code to complete the installation.

My guess is that you have found an old copy of this but you won't be able to get an authorisation code.

I'm not sure of that site but 'Kaspersky' is great BUT not available for free. BUT you can basically get it free by using AOL Active Virus Shield. It's RUN by Kaspersky under AOL's name so It's just like using KAV (which is the BEST antivirus!) =)
I used Kaspersky and it's really good Based from experience, my pc had a virus and after I installed Kaspersky, it immediately recognized the virus. Try it.

i downloaded this norton antivirus 2007 - i know - and burned it on a disc, then installed it. it asks me to remove my current one being 2003. then afterwards long story short, the person who made it turned out to be a virus. i uninstalled it and thats when the virus took effect. my computer acted weird and logged me off so i cut it off immediately.

I've found Avast's boot-time scan to be a very effective method of virus removal and have used Avast to remove viruses on systems that couldn't be removed by other AV programs. Once a virus loads itself on your system and is running it can take several defensive measures to prevent AV software from removing it. The boot-time scan can perform a scan while Windows is still in the process of booting up, before any programs or services are loaded, including viruses. Plus is supports virus scanning for email and IM, but the boot-scan is what gives Avast a huge advantage over other AV programs, including the expensive ones like Norton and McAfee. I've found a combination of Avast for anti-virus, Windows Defender (which is a free download from Microsoft) for Adware/Spyware removal and switching to Firefox to be an effective solution to control virus and adware problems, plus it's totally free. Ad-Aware SE Personal is good for adware/spyware removal also, and a good alternative to Windows Defender if you a version of Windows other than XP or if you don't have a "genuine" copy of XP.

I recently got internet (finally) and I am looking for the best firewall and antivirus/anti-spy protection, preferably a free download if it's good. Here's some I looked at on PC World: avast, avg, a-squared, ad-aware, jetico. I also already had windows defender, yahoo anti-spy, and live onecare safety scanner. Are any of these any good? Also when I bought the laptop years ago it came with mcafee and norton but they are the old (2002) versions. would they be worth keeping? Dump the Norton and the McAfee, they will be useless as they are way out of date. I would definitely uninstall both.

This happens from time to time. Update your software by clicking on the update button. If it will not update via the update button you can download the update to your hard drive and then try and update from file or uninstall and reinstall AVG again and it will work.

AVG is a great free program that will clean most issues.

I would also suggest that before you do this, you look to see if you have system restore turned on.

this is a nice little feature that Microsoft added that can return you machine to the last known good setup in case something goes wrong.

I have seen in the past, where a virus will get written to this back-up and then re-infect the machine even though the antivirus said that it is clean.

right-click on my computer, properties, system restore. Disable this, reboot, then run the antivirus.

Problems with Norton Security Center/ AT&T Yahoo!?

Yesterday, I opened my AT%26T Yahoo! (I'll abbreviate to ATTY from now on) browser, and I was prompted to download new software from ATTY. The download totally revamped their online protection. It used to be ATTY antivirus and ATTY antispyware, but now it's all Norton.

The thing is, it's making me browser slow and my games lag. The ATTY one was much better. Should I just delete them and download free antivirus?

EDIT with an update - I uninstalled the entire ATT/Yahoo protection suite, although it left some CA bits behind. Then I went to Live One and signed up for the free trial. After the installation, I am good to go, with no lingering Norton/CA problems.

My windows update used to be automatic. When my Norton antivirus told me that my subscription had already expired, I uninstall it and downloaded free antivirus. I bought a computer that came with a 60 day trail of Norton Antivirus 2006 (NAV6) well, it expired. Now I went out and bought Norton Antivirus 2007 (NAV7) and tried installing it.
