Ok firstly you can't get a free download for windows xp professional, i think you can for front page though.

I have Norton 360, and i've used Norton Internet Security in the past, I'd say Norton 360 is better because there is a PC clean-up feature, and 2gb online back-up.

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from http://www.download.com/ I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps

Instead of all these "Mine is better than yours" answers that go on around here, I'll instead answer with the facts.

Looking at current protection ratings, AVG scores a lowly 90% protection against all known viruses, whilst Avast comes in at 92%. This means they are letting through roughly one in every ten viruses - pretty shocking.

Norton and McAfee are slightly better by protecting against 98.3% and circa 97% respectfully of all known viruses. However, Norton and McAfee can be known for being very heavy programs which can tend to slow down certain machines. If you are thinking of installing either of these I would definitely recommend you download their free trial to check it does not affect your machine in this way prior to opening your wallet.

If you would be interested in other Security products that are better than all of these, you should try either Prevx1, Kaspersky or F-Secure who all score over a 99% protection rating.

Out of these three my recommendation would be Prevx1, as this is the quickest at protecting against new outbreaks of malware.

AVG and AVAST are the two mostly recommended; they are both free. Avast requires yearly registration; AVG does not. Updates are good for both, but Avast has fewer problems. The AOL antivirus is good but acts like a virus itself and prevents legitimate downloads and installation of some of your programs.

And good luck trying to get rid of that AOL program. At least Norton has a free tool at Symantec to get rid of Norton; it would be helpful if AOL provided a similar tool. My personal favorite is Avast, of the free anti-virus programs. Nothing is 100% though, and switching to Mozilla Firefox or the latest Opera browsers eliminate spyware and malware pretty much. PC World, Kim Commando, Leo Laporte all give good tips.

McAfee is a total ripoff. Aside from membership, I had to pay $49 for a pin number to unlock a long distance phone number and speak with a live tech who knew nothing and did nothing. PCTools products do get good reviews. The good thing is they have free versions of their products. They work great. Spyware Doctor from the Google pack is a must. I highly recommend it. The answer to your question will differ from person to person as they will tell you that the one they use is the best, but that is there personal preference.

From my experience , antivirus and anti spy ware is only as good as its data base, it does not matter, which one it is, if it has not got the virus in its data base then it will not pick up that particular virus,

There are thousands of wild viruses out there; your guess to how many is as good as mine. So I think in picking any antivirus and antispyware, is down to personal choice and which one you are happy with.

I have tried out most of them, paid and free versions and they all have their good points and their bad points. The two that I would not recommend, from my experience with them are Norton and Mcafee.

My experience with Norton was that it slowed my pc down that it was like having a virus installed, and Mcafee would not work for me. I have tried True Sword, did not think much of it gets rid of 3 viruses and then you have to buy it to remove the rest. That did not impress me.

I have AVG and I love it, it really causes no problems at all for me. You might want to make sure you don't have any viruses or malware, those are biggies when it comes to slowing down your machine. I guess if you have an older computer, it could be using a lot of the resources from it, but still...It would help to have the specs (memory, processor speed, OS, other programs running) to figure out if AVG is the cause or not.

Also, to remove it you would go to start%26gt;control panel%26gt;Add or Remove programs.

Free Mcafee with Comcast not working...?

I have Mcafee free thru my comcast connection. For the last three weeks, it doesn't work. When I click on the icon, the box that normally comes up when starting comes up and then disappears after 5 seconds. If I right click and hit run, it says a scan is already in progress. I cannot access any part of Mcafee from any program files and it does not show as running. I don't want to download another free spyware/antivirus since they all seem to be fraudulent. This virus is too smart. It also happened to my PC last time! Maybe that virus made a "backdoor" onto your computer that someone is directly controlling your PC. The guy controling it may have been stopping your anti-virus software downloads, and then corrupting you remaining anti-virus software installed on your PC.

I guess there is no more choice but to reformat your PC and reinstall Windows. That's what I did when my PC suffered from a serious threat of a trojan.

Once the scan is done save the report somewhere in your file. Then, print the report (make sure the full path of all the infected files is shown on the print) and then begin to delete all the files manually. I looked at all the answers given to you. I can honestly recommend the AOL (Active Virus Shield) anti-virus. It is superb. It does not allow anything coming through. For a firewall I definitely recommend Comodo. Please install the Active Virus Shield, you will not be sorry. Stay away from AVG, it allows toomuch coming through.

have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. On the home page select downloads and then the appropriate category.I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps.
